Free Will Writing Service at Claphams Solicitors

Having a valid Will is the only way to ensure that your estate is distributed according to your wishes. While many have used this extra time at home to organise their personal affairs, a recent survey from the Law Society discovered that over half of respondents (59 per cent) did not have a Will in place following the first lockdown. On top of that, 29 per cent said their Will was not up-to-date or reflective of their current life circumstances.

At Claphams Solicitors, we are proud to partner with Cancer Research UK (CRUK) as one of their official Will writers. If you are looking to write or update your Will, get in touch with our Wills lawyers and ask about the Free Will Writing Service.

Reasons to update your Will

For those who already have a Will, it is crucial that the legal document is regularly reviewed. It is common for your personal circumstances to change and, as such, your Will should reflect that. Whether you got married, divorced, had children, bought or sold your house, or need to change the appointment of your executor, updating your Will is the only way to ensure that your estate is handled exactly how you wish. If not, this can lead to the Will being contested, which can cause added stress for all those concerned.

What happens if I don’t have a Will?

Without a Will, your estate will be divided in line with the intestacy rules in Scotland, which can leave loved ones (such as cohabiting partners and stepchildren) with no legal rights to your estate. Similarly, if your Will has not been updated for some time, people close to you may not be recognised during the distribution process or assets could go to someone you didn’t intend (e.g., an ex-spouse).

Who can get a Free Will?

As long as you are over the age of 18, Claphams Solicitors can help you write or update a simple Will at no cost. Sorting your Will through our Free Wills Scheme will not only give you peace of mind that your possessions and assets are distributed in line with your wishes, but you will also be supporting a life-saving charity.

How does the Free Wills Service help CRUK?

While there is no obligation to do so, many of those who use the Free Wills Scheme choose to leave a gift in their Will (also known as a legacy gift) to CRUK. You can even specify which particular cancer type your money will support or the research facility it will go to. If you would like to leave a gift in your Will to CRUK, contact our team today
